2017 Millman Scholar: Dr. James H. McMillan

James McMillanJames H. McMillan teaches educational psychology, research, and measurement in the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond.  At VCU, he served for 20 years as Executive Director of the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC), a partnership between VCU and seven Richmond area school districts, and developed a doctoral program in research and evaluation.  Dr. McMillan was awarded the VCU School of Education’s Charles Ruch Teaching Award in 2013.

A prolific author, Dr. McMillan has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and reports every year since he arrived at VCU in 1979.  He has authored over a dozen books, and has presented nationally and internationally at over 100 professional conferences.  His recent research focuses on how students’ being wrong—making mistakes and learning errors on assessments—can facilitate motivation, self-regulation, perseverance, study skills, and subsequent achievement.

Through these contributions and his active participation in a number of professional associations, Dr. James McMillan has established a well-earned reputation as a leading authority on assessment.
